Surroundings
SENJ
Senj abounds in ancient archaeological sites, numerous churches and chapels, gothic and renaissance palaces, fortresses and towers. The most monumental fortress in the entire Croatian Littoral, the Nehaj fortress, was built in 1558 to defend the town.
KRASNO
The road that turns off the main coastal road in Sveti Juraj leads to Krasno Polje. This is the largest village on Mount Velebit and is located at an elevation of 714 metres above sea level. Krasno is one of the most famous Marian pilgrimage sites in Croatia and is visited by tens of thousands of believers every year.
ZAVIŽAN
Zavižan is one of the best-known localities in the Northern Velebit National Park. Located at 1594 m above sea level, underneath the Vučjak peak, is the mountain hut Zavižan and the oldest high-altitude weather station in Croatia, established in 1953.
NP SJEVERNI VELEBIT
Established in 1999, Northern Velebit is the youngest of eight national parks in Croatia. The park contains the strict reserve for the Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi (crests), where over 150 caverns have been discovered thus far. The best known is called Lukina Jama, one of the deepest in the world.
KUTEREVO
In the village of Kuterevo lies a unique sanctuary for young bears, the only one of its kind in the world. Sanctuary is open for visitors from spring to late fall. Except bears you can also visit the eco / ethno village. Village Kuterevo has 10,000 visitors annually.
GACKA
Gacka, the most famous trout water in the world, springs with attractive mills of place Sinac. This natural pearl and a rarity, is considered as geomorphological and hydrological natural monument. At the spring of Gacka in Sinac are mills that still evoke the former way of life.
NP PLITVIČKA JEZERA
Plitvice lakes were declared national park in 1949., they are one of the most beautiful natural sights in Europe. In the year 1979 UNESCO has declared it with all rights as the World’s natural inheritance. Embraced by high wooded mountains, one beneath another lie sixteen beautiful lakes of crystal blue-green water.
GRABOVAČA
The Caving park Grabovača is only 2,5 km from the centre of Perušić. There are 6 caves and one pothole in the area and three of the caves are protected on the national level as geomorphologic monuments of nature. During spring, summer and autumn the visitors are taken on a tour of the cave Samograd by the guides. Other caves visited individually – without a guide.
ZAVRATNICA
Zavratnica is one of the most beautiful bays of the Croatian coast. Because of the beautyfull landscape and natural values 1964. was placed under special protection in the category of protected landscapes. Since 1981. is an integral part of the nature park ”Velebit”.
NIKOLA TESLA
Memorial Center “Nikola Tesla” was established in 2006. g. in order to preserve lasting memories and express gratitude to the character and work of Nikola Tesla, one of the greatest scientists, inventors, and humanist., a native of Smiljan.
